An appeal to people planning to attend next year’s conference

We’re really looking forward to next year’s conference, the fourth International Conference on Men’s Issues (July 6-8, in Birmingham). We’ve already had £22.00 ticket deposits from many who attended the London conference last year. They tell us that the talks were only one element in the overall conference experience. The opportunity to spend three days in the company of people with similar interests and concerns was, for many of them, the biggest reward. Many new friendships were forged.

Deposits have been sent by people living in a number of countries, including:

  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Germany
  • France
  • Sweden
  • Finland

We expect that most conference attendees, as at the London conference last year, will be British – so this appeal is mainly directed at them. We need to be confident that a sufficient number of people will attend the next conference, for it to be financially viable. So we’ve started (as we did with the London conference) with a request that you make a deposit of £22.00 as soon as possible. The sum will be refunded in full in the highly unlikely event that the conference doesn’t take place.

Your deposit will guarantee the availability of a ticket, an Early Bird ticket if you wish. The deadline to pay the £203.00 balance for an Early Bird ticket (£225.00) will be four weeks after the announcement that the conference is definitely going to take place. After the deadline you can pay the balance of £243.00 before 24:00 GMT 7 April, during which time tickets will be priced at £265.00. We need to set an early deadline for ordering tickets because we need to ensure we have the money to pay for major outlays such as venue hire, speaker flights, hotel accommodation etc.

You don’t need to have made the £22.00 deposit to later order a ticket, but if you don’t:

  • you won’t be guaranteed ticket availability
  • you’ll be adding to the risk that the conference is cancelled simply because not enough people have paid the deposit to give us confidence about likely attendance numbers
